I was thinking of upgrading my hard drive in my new system from my slow 7,200rpm to a 10,000rpm Velociraptor 300GB for $199. Then I got to reading reviews of some of these fast solid-state disks (SSDs) that totally crush even the Velociraptor. I'm kind of leaning towards the OCZ Colossus, mainly because it comes in 3.5" form-factor without needing an adapter like all the 2.5-inchers do. Cheapest I found it for is $437.99 on ZipZoomFly.com for the 120GB version. Kind of pricy, at $3.64 per gigabyte, compared to $0.66 per gigabyte for the Velociraptor, but I hear its supposed to just make your system scream, with Windows boot-up time taking only 15 seconds and programs and games loading nearly instantly. I'd be keeping my 500GB 7,200rpm drive around for data storage of course, just keeping the OS and apps and games on the smaller SSD.
I'm just wondering if I should buy now, or if I should wait another six months, if the price is really going to come down on them or not in 2010 like some people are predicting... |

Well, if you're going to buy something that's faster than a standard 7200rpm hardrive, you should buy an SSD. You'll see a huge improvement in load times and stuff, compared to a Velociraptor. If it were me, I would wait as long as I could to let the prices go down. I have read good things about the OCZ Agility series and the Vertex series, so I would recommend one of those. Here's a link to some 120gb SSD's from newegg.com. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150636%201421439416&name=120GB The Agility SSD is $349.99 after rebates. Not too bad.
Patriot and Corsair do not seem to be too bad either. I'd go Corsair over Patriot, but Patriot still looks good. They both have some reasonably priced 128gb SSD's. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150636%201421430849&name=128GB Sorry I am so late. PC has been down because my Sapphire HD 5850 was faulty. |

Reviews on the colossus drives are not that great. A 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch adapter is like 5 bucks. Id stick to OCZ because they seem to be at the forefront of SSD tech and provide firmware upgrades very regulary and have an active forum. Id stick to the Agility series... unless you can wait for the new sandforce controllers in the Vertex 2 line which are really going to drive prices down.
